Interview
First of all, we like to thank you for the opportunity to interview you...
Groove: Tell us about your views on Pole Dancing. There must have been raised eyebrows when you mention that you practice and teach this exotic art form.
Ming: All the time. That’s why I keep pictures of some of the hardest pole moves in my cell phone so that I can shut the skeptics up, if there should be one! But often after sighting the pictures, their brows raise even higher and ask “Is that you?” Haha...
Groove:
What advice would you give to ladies who are afraid to try out pole dancing (for fear of difficulty and lack of both strength and flexibility)?
Ming: I’ll tell them pole fitness BUILDS strength and flexibility. If you already have them, I’ll be out of job! That said, of course in any sport or dance if you have those elements it only makes it easier.
Groove:
What makes your teaching style unique?
Ming: Hmm, do I have one? Lol! I can’t think of any, but I guess my students like my style because I’m short, not pretty, highly ordinary and hence very unintimidating. You know how you get frightened by some gorgeous and excellent dance teachers whom you just feel like you’ll never be good enough to be like them? But seriously when I teach, I mean business. That’s when they realize if a very normal person can execute all those hard pole tricks, anyone can.
Groove:
Which pole trick is your favourite?
Ming: Many. But I was euphoric to get the handspring after practicing one beep (censored) year. I think I was the first Singaporean poler to get it. It’s like a graduation when you get that. It’s like you have arrived!
Groove:
What is your advice to those who just cannot master that one frustrating pole trick? How do not give up and is there REALLY light at the end of the tunnel?
Ming: I think I’ve answered this in the last question…determination. There is always light at the end of the tunnel! Look to your peers for advice on how they achieved the move. Online forums are a wealth of advice from both instructors and students. However, if a move or trick is causing you pain, be very careful as it may simply be too advanced for where you’re at.
Groove: What can we look forward to at your pole workshops at Groove?
Ming: Have fun executing the moves you have learned and at the same time build stamina. Many forget the cardio part when they concentrate on getting those individual pole moves.
Groove:
Words to live by?
Ming: “Dancers are the athletes of God” – Albert Einstein; “I generally avoid temptation unless I can’t resist it” – Mae West.
Thank you once again !!
